Musicianship
Musicianship allows anyone to get more out of their music-making by developing skills and an understanding of how music ‘works’. Over the last 8 years Pip has enjoyed helping many singers aged from 2 to age 75 (and some …) to get more out of their singing and music-making through the study of Musicianship.
She now offers a progressive series of intensive Musicianship workshops for adults following the ethos and approach developed by the Hungarian educationalist Zoltan Kodaly. Pip’s courses use materials developed by the award-winning National Youth Choir of Scotland. These materials are divided into 6 levels (Bronze 1 & 2, Silver 1 & 2 and Gold 1 & 2). Each level is taught over 8 x 2 hour sessions in a small group - with (enjoyable!) homework to be completed between sessions.
This is very much a skills-based course - participants must complete each level successfully before moving on to the next level. Successfully completing Gold Level 2 takes you to the equivalent of ABRSM Grade V theory - except that you have the bonus that you can sight sing as well! Studying Musicianship costs £100 a term (or what you can manage) including the workbook, online videos and recordings to support your study.
Pip teaches one Musicianship level per term (so it takes 2 years to complete the 6 level course). The most recent cohort to graduate completed Gold 2 in Summer 2022 with every right to feel proud of themselves having studied the 1st 3 levels entirely over Zoom during lockdown. It is brave, challenging and rewarding to study Musicianship as an adult. You can learn skills you never imagined you could master and feel as vulnerable as a caterpillar as you meet your learning edge! We have developed a safe, supportive space in which to try and make mistakes and a relaxed system of mentoring and peer-support to make the experience more enjoyable and help each other succeed.
There are currently 2 groups starting Musicianship Gold Level 1 this Summer and it is likely there will be a new intake starting with Bronze Level 1 in January 2024. Do get in touch with Pip or speak to current or former students if you would like to find out more.
